About GLOWS
GLOWS Community Lighthouse ("GLOWS") is a coalition of agencies, churches, organizations and individuals working to provide temporary overnight shelter to our unhoused friends during inclement weather in the winter time and hot meals twice a week. This ministry is based out of the Salvation Army in Garland.
Volunteer Roles
-
Meal Team
Help provide breakfast or dinner during activations. Volunteers will also be asked to help serve and clean up. You can sign up to do this without bringing a meal item, and/or you can bring a meal item without being required to stay and serve.
-
Bus Team
The Bus Team provides a rider with each bus going out to pick up our friends in the evenings and takes them back out in the mornings. This task usually takes about 2 hours in the evening and 1-2 hours in the morning, depending on the number of guests.
-
Blanket Team
This team helps collect blankets throughout the year for activations. This team also helps launder blankets after use and prepare them for the next activation.
-
Night/Day Shift Team
This team helps monitor the facility and tend to our guests during activations. Shifts are 4 hours. Night shifts are the primary need since that is the primary time of being open.
-
Set Up/Breakdown Team
This team helps unload the trailer and set up cots for the next night's activation. They will also be asked to come to the gym the evening of the day we close the shelter from that activation to break down and load up cots and general clean up/sweeping.
-
Inventory Team
This team will work together to ensure ample supplies are delivered to the gym from storage the evening before activation and will inventory and pick up supplies the evening after activation to take back to storage. This team will work with the public to try to get donations.
